My Origins

(And Why It Matters)

As a human…
With a master’s degree in political science, I have worked on a political campaign and numerous nonprofits. I have managed a food bank, coordinated hundreds of volunteers at an LGBTQ+ community nonprofit, and volunteered for a crisis hotline. Through these things, I have been inspired by the people I have worked with and worked for.

My own struggles have included suicidality, accepting my queerness (I’m pansexual), navigating these learning healthy masculinity, and having sat with folks experiencing far worse.

As a writer…
Those experiences shape my stories, stories that show the frailty of power and resilience of compassion. That show wonder in even the darkest places. Fantasy is a genre where anything is possible and I refuse to accept any limits on who can go on adventures, who can protect those they love, who can be a hero.

My Other Human Things

I grew up in rural Kentucky, USA, and currently live in Colorado with two wonderful partners who are much cooler than me. I love stories of all kinds like:

  • Books: The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty, Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir, The Three Body Problem by Cixin Liu

  • Shows: Star Trek (TNG, DS9, Lower Decks), Arcane, She-Ra (2018)

  • Movies: Pacific Rim, Mad Max Fury Road, Barbie (2023), Encanto

  • Video Games: Mass Effect Series, Baldur’s Gate 3, Stellaris, Hades

Beyond that, I also enjoy:

  • Trail running and backpacking (cause I feel like I’m on a fantasy adventure)

  • Skiing (if you love the outdoors but have disabilities that complicate that, check out the National Sports Center for the Disabled)

  • D&D (I’ve been DMing once a week for nearly ten years)
